  • Overview


    Under the direct supervision of licensed personnel, performs basic direct and indirect patient care duties in support of the treatment and care of patients.


    Responsible for the preparation, distribution, inventory, and management of both Human Milk (HM) and Donor Human Milk (DHM). Applies established principles and practices of appropriate infection control, technical calculations involving weights, measures conversions and metrics to the daily operations of the NICU Milk Lab. Correctly manage the receiving and labeling of mothers HM according to established procedures.


    Provides patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification, registration, and/or assessed competencies.  Practice will be in accordance with laws and regulations and will adhere to established policies, procedures and practice guidelines.


    Enthusiasm for breastfeeding and desire to help mothers enjoy a breastfeeding experience.
    Supports the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
    Performs various duties assisting staff nurses in the treatment and care of breastfeeding patients in accordance with the established methods and procedure of the hospital.
    Maintain competencies and work in the NICU nutrition room as assigned.
    Serves as a resource to other departments for mothers admitted to non-Women & Infant units.
    Contributes to efficient departmental operations in order to control cost and insure productivity by organizes and utilizing time, supplies, and equipment efficiently and effectively.
    Assists patients with toileting needs.
    Observes and reports any minor changes in patient’s mental, physical, or home situation, or emotional conditions.
    Completes required documentation and submit to health care team in a timely and accurate manner.
    Interacts effectively with patients, families, and team members.
    Assists in routine maintenance and maintains upkeep of patient rooms to ensure a safe clean and orderly environment.
    Participates in continuous quality improvement teams and activities.
    Participates in supporting the organization’s vision, mission and values and adheres to DeKalb Medical Standards of Behavior.
    Performs other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives.


    Minimum Education, Experience and Licensure Required:

    • High school graduate or equivalent


    • CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) required



      • One to two years of experience in breastfeeding education and support (e.g., Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), WIC peer counselor, La Leche League Leader, ROSE Community Transformer or personal breastfeeding experience considered)


    • Current Basic Life Support.
