    JOB DESCRIPTION: Performs complex histologic procedures and serves as a technical resource for less experienced staff. Assists in research projects and in formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures. Helps in maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment and oversees quality control activities. May supervise employees within a section of the department. Perform other related duties as required. Operates precision laboratory instruments and scientific equipment. Performs preventive maintenance according to established procedures and schedules. Troubleshoots equipment problems or contacts the necessary services techs to resolve issues/equipment needs. Performs minor repairs, adjustments, or calibrations according to equipment service literature. Contacts suppliers to ensure adequate supplies of specific products for emergency and routine use. Evaluates new instruments and monitors supply and reagent use. Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Follows the principles of sterile technique and other infection control policies to comply with universal precautions. Takes required precautions to comply with CAP, organizational and other safety standards when working with specimens and laboratory equipment. Helps maintain Materials Safety Data Sheets. Prepares fixative and staining solutions according to established laboratory procedures. Performs complex histologic techniques to prepare and stain tissue specimens for laboratory examination and analyses. Accessions tissue specimens and biopsies; prepares routine specimens for fixation in automatic processors. Embeds and sections specimens using a microtome. Affixes tissue to slides. Stains, cover slips, and labels slides. Maintains a reference system of control blocks and slides for use in special studies. May keep productivity records and document specific procedures to support laboratory activities. Assists in developing, implementing and revising histologic policies and procedures. Evaluates reliability of current methodologies; recommends changes to improve current practices. Helps maintain the laboratory¿s procedure manual. Monitors quality improvement standards; recommends, implements and evaluates operational changes to improve quality and efficiency. Records and maintains data pertaining to quality assurance. Meets regularly with manager to discuss quality improvement issues. Assists in development of, implementation of and compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Leads staff and provides input to employee performance; communicates goals and standards. Provides ongoing performance feedback, addresses problems, orients and trains new employees, verifies competency and identifies and suggest ways to develop skills. Assists with employee scheduling and work assignments. Assists in preparation for inspections and/or accreditation visits. Identifies, analyzes and resolves technical and operational problems. Explains, seeks and makes recommendations on operational changes. Responds to inquiries from clients and other hospitals on availability of tissue specimens.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma, bachelors degree preferred but not required. Five years of relevant experience with supervisor/lead experience preferred. Certification as HTL(ASCP) or certification as HT(ASCP).

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation , Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
