Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

  • Provides the highest acuity of care under the direction of a supervising cardiac surgeon in the discipline of cardiac surgery. Examines, evaluates, and treats patients with all ASA levels of medical acuity, and that require all degrees of invasive and interventional procedures.
  • Performs cross-functional responsibilities, often simultaneously, in the operating room, ICU, step down unit and outpatient areas. Handles full rotation of care where providers perform pre-op, intra-op, post-op care/procedures.
  • Functions at the highest level of autonomy, within the limits of mid-level licensure. Teaches and mentors junior Physician Assistants in cardiac surgical care. Proficient in: central line placement, swan ganz insertion, chest tube insertion, intra-aortic balloon insertion and removal, all intraoperative conduit harvest, chest closure, and first and second assisting in all types of cardiac surgical procedures.
  • Educates patients and families on risks, outcomes, and health maintenance. With remote supervision, performs accurate complete history and physical examinations of preoperative cardiothoracic surgical patients. With remote supervision, performs accurate and complete daily clinical assessment of pre and post-operative cardiothoracic surgical patients.
  • With remote supervision, reviews, interprets, and integrates daily laboratory and radiographic data into the cardiothoracic surgical patients daily assessment and plan. Performs intraoperative assistance on all cardiothoracic surgical patients. With proficiency, performs endoscopic and open saphenous vein harvesting.
  • With proficiency, performs endoscopic and open radial artery harvest. With remote supervision, performs arterial and venous cannulation and catheter placement. Performs discharge summaries upon completion of each patients hospitalization.
  • Educates patients and families on procedures and expectations of all things cardiothoracic surgery. Maintains professional growth by participating in educational programs and professional organizations and activities to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
  • Maintains clean, safe and therapeutic environment for patient in compliance with Universal Precautions guidelines and safety standards. As part of a patient focused service, promotes a supportive and healing environment so that customer and staff satisfaction are enhanced. Supports cost efficient/effective delivery of care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Graduation from a nationally certified Physician's Assistant Program or an accredited school of Nursing and certified as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Demonstrated highest level of proficiency, certified by the chief PA of the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Chairman of the Section of the Surgery.
  • Current licensure as a Physician's Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the state of Georgia. BLS, ACLS, and Healthcare Provider certifications required.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium Max 25lbs): up to 25 lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 25 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
