Description

JOB DESCRIPTION: Performs routine or complex histologic procedures to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment while upholding the values of the organization. This includes providing and demonstrating exemplary customer service skills throughout the preanalytical, analytical and post analytical processes. May accession tissue specimens; prepares routine specimens for fixation in automatic processors. Embeds and sections specimens using a microtome. Affixes tissue to slides, stains, cover slips, and labels slides. Maintains a reference system of control blocks and slides for use in special studies. Prepares fixative and staining solutions according to established laboratory procedures. May perform frozen section microtomy. Operates precision laboratory instruments and scientific equipment. Performs preventive maintenance according to established procedures and schedules. Troubleshoots equipment issues, performs minor repairs, adjustments, or calibrations according to equipment service literature. Assists in the formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures. Assists with monitoring and maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and chemicals. Performs and participates in the review and reporting of quality control activities in the laboratory. Takes required precautions to comply with CAP, organizational and other safety standards when working with specimens and laboratory equipment. May keep productivity records and document specific procedures to support laboratory activities. Assists in developing, implementing and revising histologic policies and procedures. Evaluates reliability of current methodologies; recommends changes to improve current practices. Professional Development: Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • High School diploma.
  • Certification as HT(ASCP) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, with a minimum of two (2) years' experience, or certification as HTL(ASCP) or HTL-by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists with no experience.
  • Certification must be obtained within 18 months of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation , Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
