Description

A working supervisor who plans, organizes and directs the day to day operations of the phlebotomy team including staff supervision, coordination with technical coordinators, lab managers and other hospital departments.

  • Responsible for oversight of phlebotomy and serves as the technical expert in phlebotomy. Supervises staff and employee performance in coordination with manager. Assists manager to resolve Human resource related issues, assists in determining staffing needs, interviews and hires staff.
  • Provides on-going performance feedback, addresses problems, orients and trains employees, verifies competency and identifies and suggests ways to develop skills. Provides formal and informal counseling to employees. Trains/mentors new employees.
  • Creates phlebotomy schedule and assigns work to others accordingly to ensure coverage of all shifts and areas. Act as liaison on off shifts/ weekends. Maintains the stock of commonly used supplies, performing routine inspections of supply levels to ensure adequate availability and ordering any necessary supplies as needed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Registers, collects, labels and processes patient specimens for testing in a timely manner consistent with established laboratory policies and procedures.
  • This includes routine and advanced venipuncture along with other specimen collection, as required. Takes prompt action to resolve any problem with the registration, collection or processing of all specimens including referral specimens using available procedure manuals or reference materials.
  • May work variable shifts and locations as assigned. Practices universal precautions, barrier protection methods, infection control and isolation procedures when working with body fluids and other contagion to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Reviews test requisitions and specimen labels for accurate information and orders tests appropriately. Follows up on all tests with incomplete information or questionable test orders.
  • May be required to schedule and arrive lab appointments. Processes all emergency orders (STATS) within the required time frame. Preserves the integrity of each sample prior to distributing them to the appropriate department.
  • Processes and prepares referral specimens for shipping to reference laboratories. Reconciles outstanding test orders that have not been resolved through standard operating procedures.
  • Initiates intervention on unacceptable specimens, as needed. Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services and training classes for various computer systems necessary for patient registration and referral testing.
  • Takes training lead, often as Super User or train the trainer responsibilities. Helps manager with or runs the phlebotomy training classes. Maintains computerized records, resolves and troubleshoots outstanding specimens/collections.
  • Identifies, understands and documents issues, problems, and opportunities and escalates to manager when appropriate. Represents department by actively participating in interdepartmental teams.
  • Helps support a positive team atmosphere by participating in all group meetings and team building. Also represents department on interdepartmental teams and LEAN activities.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities as it relates to registration procedures, wait times, phlebotomy, processing and the transportation of specimens.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 4 yrs. relevant phlebotomy experience required.
  • Willingness to work varied locations with slight variation in day shifts, occasional weekend and off shifts.
  • Should have reliable transportation.
  • Previous employee supervision experience preferred;
  • hospital phlebotomy experience preferred,
  • computer skills; medical terminology;
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
