Emory Healthcare is where belonging meets purpose.
The Emory Cardiothoracic Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2026 cohort.
OVERVIEW:
Cardiothoracic surgery is a highly dynamic and complex surgical subspecialty that requires a team of clinicians operating at the highest scope of practice for optimal medical care and surgical outcomes. Advanced practice providers (APPs), including physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), have become essential members of that team; however, sub-specialty education in APP training is minimal. Postgraduate training in all aspects of medicine is becoming of greater importance as an adjunct to traditional NP and PA education. As postgraduate education becomes increasingly popular, programs specializing in cardiothoracic surgery are exceptionally rare. The Emory Healthcare Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is committed to fulfilling the need for postgraduate surgical education by establishing an APP Fellowship program of excellence. The Emory Cardiothoracic Surgery APP Fellowship offers formal education and training more rapidly and efficiently than traditional on-the-job training.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Emory Cardiothoracic Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a certificate-granting program designed to train newly graduated advanced practice providers and those transitioning from other subspecialties in cardiothoracic surgery through a comprehensive didactic curriculum and rigorous clinical education. The Fellowship is a 12-month program consisting of didactics, proctored procedures, supervised surgical cases, endoscopic vein harvesting training, and professional mentorship. The live and web-based didactic curriculum runs concurrently with clinical education at three of Emory Healthcare’s metro Atlanta hospitals: Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory University Hospital, and Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital. The program is designed to maximize exposure to routine and complex cardiothoracic surgery principles through direct patient care in the operating room, intensive care unit, cardiac telemetry units, and clinic settings.
