Description

Full Time, Shift: 6:30a-5p

  • Assists attending surgeon, surgical resident and/or physician's assistant during surgical procedures including retraction, hemostasis, suctioning, suturing, suture organization, wound management and other assistance as necessary.
  • Assists in opening and closing the patient's spine.
  • Assists in opening and closing surgical wounds.
  • Performs debridement of primary and secondary closure of muscle flaps.
  • Employees in some areas may be required to assist with bone grafts, as well as, harvest and prepare bone graft for spinal fusion.
  • Assists in spine procedures including anterior cervical disectomy/fusion, posterior cervical fusion, anterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, posterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, and insertion of spinal instruments.
  • Preps, positions, catherizes, and drapes patients and assists in exposing and suturing wounds.
  • Assists in management of patients during emergency situations. Maintains confidentiality, patient privacy, and operation room standards.
  • Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development.
  • Attends educational in-services as appropriate.
  • Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
  • Complies with and adheres to departmental policies and procedures in accordance with state, federal, and organizational guidelines.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • All nurses employed in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must have a valid, active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board.
  • Successful completion of the Emory Surgical Assistant training program or a Registered Nurse/Physician's Assistant nationally certified as an Registered Nurse First Assistant.
  • BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required. (Must be from American Heart Association)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

(Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.


ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

  • Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks.
  • Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation , Shift work, Travel may be required.
  • Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
